Give It a Shot and Get That Shot!
We
must all be well aware of the current health crisis that the entire planet is
experiencing. The pandemic has been going on for two years, and thankfully, we
already have vaccines to combat the deadly coronavirus. It is also vital that
we get immunization against the virus as soon as possible.
As
children, we used to go to the nearest clinic or hospital in the city to get
routinely vaccinated. And growing up, we were given multiple vaccinations
against diseases like tuberculosis, poliomyelitis, diphtheria, tetanus,
pertussis, and measles. Children are then immunized from an early age since
they are susceptible to diseases at a young age. The consequences of these
diseases can be very serious, even life-threatening.
We
are always at risk of becoming infected with COVID-19, just as with any other
infectious disease, but getting vaccinated can reduce our chances of becoming
ill and avoid developing severe symptoms that can place us in life-threatening
circumstances. Though there is that underlying fear and uncertainty of getting
vaccinated — I, too, at first, was skeptical over the news and the vaccine
itself as questions about it arose in my head. But there is honestly no reason
for us to fear vaccination — unless we are scared of needles!
Vaccines are made to help people develop immunity to a virus or other germ. A vaccine introduces a less harmful part of that germ — or something created to look or behave like it — into a person’s body. The body’s immune system develops antibodies that fight that particular germ and keep the person from getting sick from it. Later, if the person encounters that germ again, their immune system can “recognize” it and “remember” how to fight it off.
Getting vaccinated against COVID-19 can lower your risk of getting and spreading the virus that causes COVID-19. It keeps you, your loved ones, and everyone safe from the virus. If you are not vaccinated yet, I strongly advise you to get vaccinated; contact your local RHUs to schedule an appointment and get that shot to combat COVID-19!
